Iorlith Herself - 'Iorlith'
6 yr old brown filly by Classic (TB) out of our home bred mare, Run the Gauntlette (½TB ½ Shire) Iorlith was born one wet and windy April night in Scotland. Luckily we had brought our mare in to the foaling barn. She was another blue grey foal like Ounce, but has turned a deep chocolate since. She has one white front leg and the other is sort of washed with cream, we always thought that was the last remnants of foal coat coming off but it is still there today. She is very beautiful and has fabulous paces. Her mother behaved quite differently with her, she wouldn’t eat during her pregnancy and after she was born, Iorlith was not allowed more than a couple of yards away. She was very difficult to wean and we didn’t manage it completely until she was 11 months old! We have a theory of what was behind that and we’ll talk about it on another page.
She is very strong and self-willed but still has the lovely Shire temperament like her brothers. She went to Franck’s yard to be backed – the first time we have done this at 2 years old, but we felt she needed the discipline before she became too strong to handle. Initially she didn’t like it at all! But eventually she settled and started to enjoy her work, showing incredible balance for her age. We would love to show her, but showing is not something that is done in France! So she came home again – and then the strangest thing happened! Slowly but surely Iorlith took over from Small as leader of our herd. The accession to the throne was final on the day that Small at the age of 17 made the submission gesture to her 3 yr old daughter!
Haras de Muschamp here in France has the license for AI from Grafenstolz, the superb Trakehner eventer ridden by Michael Jung. We decided to send both Small and Iorlith there. Iorlith took first time and 11 months later produced the prettiest foal – Vaiorlith Elle Meme. However Iorlith would not let her dam speak to any of the other horses and Small did not take. The new Queen rules! This year we plan to send Iorlith to Grafenstolz again. |
